The Ten Commandments for Business Failures

In The Ten Commandments for Business Failures Donald Keough enunciates his Ten “Commandments” which he guarantees will lead to Business Failure. He cites extensively from his 60 years in business, including a period as the President of the Coca-Cola Company, indisputably one of the world’s largest and most successful companies.

Bill Gates, Chairman of Microsoft, says of this book: “Don’s commandments for business failures will teach you more about business success than a whole shelf full of books.”

In his Foreword to the book Warren Buffett, Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway and one of the world’s richest men, calls Don Keough ” an incredible business leader.” Buffett says: ” the greatest achievement of good executives is to get things done through other people…Now here is one guy who is capable of getting all kinds of people from all over the world… want to help him succeed. I’ve have seen him do it…”

My copy of The Ten Commandments for Business Failures is published by Penguin Books, Australia. You probably should be able to get this book from Penguin Books in your own country.

In this review I will mention only six of Keough’s ten ” Commandments.” It is not proper for me to touch upon all ten ” Commandments “. I recommend that the reader check out the book for the other four ” Commandments ” as well as the many examples of business failure cited by Keough.

Commandment #1—Quit Taking Risks

Keough considers this the most important of his Commandments. Stop taking risks and you stunt your growth, he says.

Keough attributes much of Coca-Cola’s present day global success to the incorporation in 1930 of the Coca-Cola Export Corporation. It was immediately after the stock market crash of 1929. Had the proposal for the estabishment of such an entity been submitted to the Board of Directors at the time, it would most certainly have been rejected. To circumvent resistance from his Board, Chairman Robert Woodruff registered a company which was independent of the mother corporation. The Coca-Cola Export Corp. remained substantially independent until 1973.

By undertaking this singular risky act of establishing the Coca-Cola Export Corp. at a  chaotic time in America’s history Woodruff launched the iconic American beverage into remote corners of the globe, paving the way for Coca-Cola’s present day domination of the world market.

Commandment #2 —Be Inflexible

Inflexibility and excessive risk aversion are shortcomings which are closely related. However, there is an important shade of difference. Truly inflexible people do not merely avoid risk; they are so set in their ways that they do not see any alternative way of doing things.

Keough cites the case of the Ford Motor Company. Henry Ford was the visionary who had a long headstart over other automobile makers. By the roaring 1920s Ford’s Model T was essentially unchanged from the model introduced in 1908.

You would undoubtedly have heard of the statement attributed to Mr. Ford that the customer could have any color he wanted as long as it was black. While Ford stubbornly resisted change his competitors were giving American consumers plenty of choice by the 1920s—more poweful engines, faster cars, and bright colorful paintwork. Finally, in 1928 Ford succumbed to consumers’ demands and launched the Model A. But it was too late—and the company never regained its lead.

Commandment #3—Isolate Yourself

CEOs and Company Directors who isolate themselves from their staff lose touch with the real world of their business.

Keough says: ” Unfortunately for those who wish to remain isolated, the history of most successful businesses runs counter to this disposition. In fact, one of the traits of many of the legendary builders of business was that they had an uncanny ability to know and to relate to their employees at every level…”

Commandment #4—Assume Infallibility

Keough gives several examples of companies succumbing to this defect.

In fact, he includes an example of his own mistake. Shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Keough, the then Company President, was at a meeting of his German management team. The German executives proposed an investment of half a billion dollars in the newly-opened East German market. He gave short shrift to the proposal, paying scant attention to the explanation of the German managers. He did not even pay attention to the part of the proposal that German bottlers or franchisees were to put up most of the investment, minimizng Coca-Cola’s exposure to any financial risk.

Fortunately, the German-born Head of Coca-Cola’s International Operations prevailed upon Keough to travel to East Germany for a first-hand look. Keough saw for himself the huge market potential of East Germany, following which he announced an investment of a billion dollars for Europe with a substantial proportion for East Germany. Thanks to that trip around the marketplace Coca-Cola is now the leading brand in its category in Eastern Europe.

Commandment #5—Play the Game Close to the Foul Line

In the past decade America has been rocked by several cases of unethical accounting by businesses. You no doubt remember Enron and WorldCom.

Keough abhors the financial juggling that goes on in many American companies. In an attempt to look good to their shareholders and to the public, some companies undertake  ” creative ” accounting, which often tip companies over the line of what is ethical and legal.

Commandment #6—Put All Your Faith in Experts and Outside Consultants

Businesses must not be so insular that they do not listen to advice from external consultants and experts. But ultimately, you must assesss any advice according to your own experience and good old common sense.

Keough himself was a leading player in the saga of New Coke in 1985. Exhaustive consumer testing and all manners of experts convinced Keough and the top management of the Coca-Cola Company to replace classic Coke with a sweeter formulation. But as you well know, New Coke was one big flop.

Coca-Cola’s failure was to listen to the consultants without taking into account the iconic and the cultural meanings of its brand.

In this book review I have mentioned only six of Don Keough’s Ten Commandments for Business Failures. I recommend that you read the book for the other 4 Commandments and the wealth of examples he cites of business failure. Keough’s examples are mainly from the world of Big Business. Nevertheless, owners of Small and Medium Enterprises are able to take away many useful tips from this little book. The Ten Commandments for Business Failures is unlike many business books on the market—it is not some treatise from an academic or a consultant; it is the work of a hands-on business manager.

Business card design ideas does not happen when you sit down and say to yourself, “I’m going to design a business card.” Inspiration or ideas don’t strike your imagination automatically. It pays to think about it for a time and ask questions.

You can approach business card design with caution or you can sit around and wait for the moment the idea hits you. Just make sure that this streak of brilliance applies to your goals.

Decide what you want to tell about yourself with your business card. Ask yourself the following questions and let your mind wander on what will constitute an effective design.

• Do you want to focus on some special business skills or personality?

• What single impression should you leave your recipients with?

• Which details should be highlighted?

• Will a conventional format, one that includes all your contact information, or a contemporary, experimental design be more apt for you?

• What would make your business card design stand out? Is it the colors, the graphic design or maybe even the shape?

All of these questions seems to be pretty basic, yet oftentimes, they end as up the most difficult thing to answer. Moreover, they can be the most time-consuming part of your business card design.

You’ll probably find these simple pieces of advice useful if you’re quite at a loss where to start or when you find yourself confused.

1. Always compare

You have seen other people’s business cards. You were probably left breathless by some designs while other were just simply put bland. Know how and what works in their design. Does it appeal to you at an emotional level or on a professional place? Draw inspiration from them and see which ideas could apply to you and your line of work.

2. Describe yourself

Is it more important to leave people with an impression of who you are or what you can do? Align your business cards with your goals and philosophies so you can be consistent. Business cards, after all, communicate at a certain level which leave your recipients with various impressions of who you are and what you can do.

3. Sell yourself and write

Try to write down everything that you’ll be putting in on your business card. Try different combinations and try to see what makes each one different. Pick the impression that first comes to mind and see how you can change it, improve it or polish it.

The Easy Way Out

If you think you’re still not up to the challenge, online printing companies can spare you the trouble and the headache of doing it all by yourself. They have professional graphic artists who could transform your vision instantly.

A much cheaper option too is to use their online design tool which guides you through each step of designing your own business card. Distinguished business card printing companies even go at lengths to offer you one on one assistance.

Whatever you decide, remember, that the business card design all boils down to you. Treat your card the courtesy and respect it deserves for whenever you hand out one, you are not only handing out a piece of card, but a little piece of yourself.

If this advice comes from a company with no vested interest i.e. you are not paying them and secondly it is a company that you can actually earn money with while you get advice from them, then you are really in a place you want to be in.

I also am a small business owner and I know well the up and down nature of your income levels. Your income can and will be affected by anything from natural disasters to economic recession. Because of this having another business that you can work in conjunction with your traditional business will be of great benefit. It will provide you with a long term residual income that is not affected by external conditions.

Using a top of the line training company with cutting edge systems will benefit you in any business venture you choose and is pretty much a must when you are dealing with competition in today’s marketplace.

In summary small business owners face a hard task each and every day. It is and always will be a battle to survive, especially as the economic conditions worldwide worsen by the day. If you can bomb proof your business by finding a way to earn a second residual income how would that make you feel. I know when I found such a way my life became much less stressful and much more enjoyable.

So get yourself into a different thought process, realise that you do not just have to rely on your traditional business to support your family and take action that will lead to your 2010 being the best it can be.

Domestic automobile repair business why the shortage of senior technicians – service companies, maintenance personnel – Automotive repair and

In sheet spray Contest site, one expert told the reporter, modern vehicle maintenance will gradually break with the past used a large wrench, large pliers, the increasing use of machinery and electronic equipment, maintenance workers, just pushed the button , you can complete the task.

One statistics, car repair business in the senior mechanic more than the basic salary in 6000 dollars, to achieve high monthly income of 12,000 ~ 15,000 yuan. This seems to be a people yearning for the job, but according to the Chinese automotive professionals study will provide the numbers, “during” the gap on vehicle maintenance personnel and 80 million people. Vehicle maintenance personnel have been for several years on the six ministries jointly announced the “shortage of qualified personnel report.”

This up to 8 months, spread over 20 provinces in China, the maintenance of the advance of the contest also reveals that Chinese auto repair industry, some problems.

According to contest organizing committee, the sub-Division in the three days before the training, maintenance workers, abnormal high enthusiasm to learn, training classrooms packed, even the apprentice under one roof, father and son living together and moving scenes, car repair mechanics very eager to advanced technical training. Although a number of technical schools set up a car repair professional related courses, but these students after graduation and really work, they also face the problem a lack of practical experience, they graduate to accept the traditional approach to training instructors train an apprentice. With the use of modern electronic detection equipment, vehicle maintenance mechanical maintenance personnel to master the traditional techniques must also be able to obtain the maintenance of modern electronic technology. For example, electronic fuel injection, ABS and other systems repairs, only experience and word of mouth approach to training can not meet the modern need for maintenance.

Reporters in the final scene that, in the sheet metal part, although the organizing committee to provide the traditional mechanical measurement and electronic measurement equipment for the two sets of players to choose from, electronic equipment also made before the relevant training, but still the choice People are more traditional equipment. One player told reporters after the game, he always have access to computers in their daily lives, so learning only electronic equipment more than an hour, and if people who never have access to computers, learning together would be more difficult.

Thus, the traditional “Seeing, touching hands, ears,” increasingly obsolete way of maintenance, control of high-tech maintenance equipment can quickly become a vehicle’s ability to perform future maintenance of a threshold. Engaged in vehicle maintenance services and technical personnel, in addition to a solid theory of automotive professionals, it also requires proficiency in a variety of testing equipment and instruments, and the use of automotive repair professional website for information on the emergence of various incurable diseases analyzed to accurately judge, skilled exclusion order at the lowest cost, the shortest working hours, the best quality service. This is the basic quality of vehicle maintenance workers, has placed enormous demands.

Lack of professional pride is a shortage of auto mechanics reasons. There are many occupations, such as police, teachers, etc., may be hard, but by society in general respect and recognition. Auto mechanics, the impression in people’s traditions, seems covered with oil, typically in a hostile work environment “blue collar.” Lack of positive publicity, the job could not be the work of young people to aspire to. The sheet sprayed reporters after the contest awards ceremony banquet, FENG Zheng-lin, vice minister of Ministry of Communications to see in person to the table and toast maintenance workers, encouraging them to continue their efforts to improve maintenance standards. Eager journalists captured this footage. I believe this footage and the dissemination of relevant reports will be turned into a driving force to encourage more people to join the ranks of vehicle maintenance.

Closed cliquish business cultures vs. Open passionate social cultures

America is essentially a business culture in nearly all aspects of life. As such, social interaction is confined within closed cliques, usually established early on in life in one’s high school and college years. Otherwise, communication with strangers is usually for business related purposes only (e.g. customer service, business transactions, sales, etc.)

Therefore, if you don’t have an established clique of friends, or you are new to the area, you are basically F***ed socially for who knows how long (unless of course you are super attractive, involved in the entertainment industry or allied with the rich and successful).

The social nature of such countries is very conservative (despite the media image of America being a wild, free, open, extroverted culture). People live in structured routines, whether it’s social or professional, and life is more of a business than a passion. Everything is highly compartmentalized into a proper time and place.

But passion is what opens people up truly to connecting with others, including strangers. Business does not, and instead treats communication as purely for business related purposes. American culture is the latter of course.

In addition, such socially closed workaholic countries are segregated, driven by fear and paranoia by their media and social consensus. People are conditioned to fear every stranger as a potential psycho or killer, despite the reality of how safe their environment really is, and fed daily news stories that reinforce that myth. It’s a form of social mind control to keep the population weak, subservient and working and consuming.

And of course, since most people are natural followers, rather than freethinkers or leaders, they will conform to that, for they assume that authority and consensus = truth, rather than the actual truth itself.

In fact, the corporate elite have a vested interest in limiting your social relationships, family life, and creativity or passions, for if you have too many friends, good social relationships and/or spend too much time cultivating your passions and creative pursuits, then you will have less time for industrious work and productivity, which America sees as the purpose of your life. You see, your life is a business resource to America, a commodity, measured in terms of productivity, not passion. Thus communication and relationships between strangers are generally confined to business related purposes.

America’s goal is for you to remain a “happy slave”, productive and efficient. To do that, it must maintain the illusion of freedom in your mind. But it definitely does NOT want to encourage you to pursue things like passion, creativity or deep human bonds and relationships. No way. Such things are counterproductive to its goal of keeping you a “happy slave” whose life is “all business”. That’s why America teaches a system where such things are highly compartmentalized, limited or suppressed. To America, the economy is number one, NOT your soul!

So what can you do about that? Well you can expose it and bring awareness to it, like I’m doing here. And you can tell yourself everyday “I am a human being! Not a business resource!” But the most important thing is for you to place yourself among groups, movements or cultures that are conducive to life of freedom, passion and rich human connections and relationships. There are alternative, counter culture and hippie-type movements in the US for instance, that support a life free of “the system” where you can meet like minded others.

Or you can go to overseas cultures where passion and camaraderie are still regarded as the focus of life, rather than cold hearted business and closed cliquishness. (I will provide some examples below) There are many cultures abroad that are far more open, relaxed and inclusive, where people are not segregated by “ice barriers” or paranoia. I’ve experienced many of them and can vouch that they are a world of difference. But the US media doesn’t want you to know about them of course, so you will not hear about this on mainstream channels. For many, this has been a happy fulfilling and permanent solution to the misery, stress and loneliness of America.

But you’d better hurry though, cause America is in a rush to try to turn the “cultures of passion” out there into cold business-like cultures like itself! So you’d better pray that it fails in its attempt to “globalize” the world into a carbon copy of itself.

Here are examples of cultures where passion, creativity, expression and human camaraderie are the focus of life and enjoyed to the fullest, where people are more socially open and less cliquish:

- Latin America, Mexico, Russia, Italy, Spain, France, Greece, Holland, Mexico, Southeast Asia, The Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, etc.

Now here are examples of cultures where people are less socially open and more cliquish, where business is the aim of life and workaholic lifestyles are idolized, where passion, creativity and social lives are suppressed or restrained:

- America, Canada, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Korea, Finland, Norway, etc.

Of course, other cultures lie somewhere between both these categories.

But keep in mind that people fit in differently in each culture, and have different experiences that will vary. There is no “one culture fits all”.

The important thing is that you choose a culture or atmosphere where your INNER matches your OUTER environment. In other words, if you are shy, conservative, socially closed or cliquish, as well as a workaholic, you would vibe best in cultures that reflect such qualities (e.g. Japan, Taiwan). But if you are open, passionate, sociable, relaxed and carefree, you’d fit best in cultures dominated by such traits (e.g. Latin America, parts of Europe). Otherwise, a mismatch between your inner self and outer environment is not a good thing. It will weaken you in the long run and not allow your natural self to come out or bring out the best in you.

Brad Sugars’ “Business is Booming” Tour is Headed to the U.S. and Canada

LAS VEGAS, NV – The unemployment rate for the U.S. may have decreased, but at 10 percent, it’s still much higher than the usual nationwide average. Since the recession began, most business owners have been worrying over their financials and numbers, wondering how their business will stay afloat until the recession finally ends.

The business owner community needs help, and ActionCOACH founder and Chairman Brad Sugars wants to come to their rescue. How exactly can one man come to the aid of business owners all across North America?

Sugars and his team at ActionCOACH have experienced an entirely different run of events during this U.S. recession. ActionCOACH, the world’s number one business coaching company, as well as the clients they service, have experienced continual, consistent growth.

Sugars wants to help the country get out of recession and to ease small and medium-sized business owners’ worries about their businesses. He kept thinking of a way he could get his invaluable business advice out to as many people as possible, all over the country.

What he came up with is something that most CEOs would say they’re too busy for. Something that many CEOs say they wish they had the time for, but ultimately don’t do.

Well, Brad Sugars will do exactly what CEOs and business experts should do for their clients – he will take time away from ActionCOACH and devote most of 2010 to tour North America, speaking at various places and giving business help and strategies, all in the form of what he’s dubbed the “Business is Booming” tour.

In order to really help business owners all across the country, Sugars is happy to take time off – about six or seven months of next year – to help business owners improve their teams, time management, cash flow, profitability, and the five most important metrics toward financial improvement, among other strategies and business tactics.

Sugars is embarking on his Business is Booming” tour, a 51-city tour from March through June next year through the U.S. and Canada. He’ll be sharing 28 proven strategies and “secrets” of staying in business during the current economic conditions to help small to medium-sized business owners all across the country.

“Business owners will walk away with vision and drive to take the business to the next level; instilled confidence in the business owner; an abundance of proven successful business strategies; and the ability to leverage your strengths,” Sugars said.

“Several countries – Ireland and the U.S., especially – have been hit hard by the recession, and people need business advice,” Sugars said. “This tour gives much-needed advice to coaches and their clients. I’m speaking about actionable items people can go away with and apply to their situations.”

Sugars has already done most of his tour, which started April 12. Sugars will travel to 52 cities in North America – from Las Vegas to Miami to New York City to Edmonton Alberta.  After taking a break for July, he’ll resume this tour again August 23, and hopes that by visiting all these major cities, people who want to attend “Business is Booming” either live in a city he’ll be speaking in, or will live within commuting distance. To help make sure lots of people will be able to see him speak, he’s even be staying in bigger states more than one day…he’ll be travelling around Florida – Miami, Orlando, Tampa and Jacksonville – for a whole week!

“The biggest disappointment is you can’t get to more people – you can only go to so many cities,” Sugars said. “There are more people that need help that just can’t get to the event. But that’s another reason I’m doing these tours – to give ActionCOACH more exposure and inform more people about what we do, so we might be able to help more people.”

Sugars is a featured columnist for Entrepreneur Magazine, has given several seminars and has written several books about business strategies, including the highly acclaimed business book series, “Instant Success Series,” published by McGraw Hill.

He has maintained his stance throughout the economic instability: “If you have the knowledge, skills and guidance, you can turn the situation into a fantastic opportunity for your business.”

It’s worked for ActionCOACH…it can work for other business owners.

Brad Sugars Brings his Business is Booming 2010 North America Tour to the Big Apple on May 10

ActionCOACH Founder and Chairman Brad Sugars brings his highly acclaimed “Business is Booming” North American Tour to Manhattan, New York on Monday, May 10, 2010, starting at 5:30 PM.

While the Wall Street began experiencing the same market volatility that marked the 2008 financial crisis this Friday morning, small business owners are eagerly awaiting Sugars’ “Business is Booming” event, which will outline 28 proven strategies and “secrets” for growing a business, even in the current tough economic conditions.

According to the most current federal data available, New York has over 1.5 million small businesses, and these small business statistics do not include all self-employed individuals working in New York.

“There is no doubt the small business sector will fuel and lead the economic recovery process.  I’m touring 52 cities in the U.S.A and Canada to share the strategies that helped ActionCOACH and its clients have a good year in 2009, while most other businesses were struggling to even stay afloat,” Sugars stated.

Not only will Sugars review a number of sales, marketing, management, cash flow and profitability strategies, he will also outline the five most important metrics toward business growth that every owner and CEO should know.

Sugars, who was named one of Entrepreneur Magazine’s Top 50 Entrepreneurs in 2007, was also one of 5 finalists for CEO of the Year in 2009 at the American Business Awards. A long-time leader of ActionCOACH, he led the company to the #65 ranked franchise globally.

Since 2003, ActionCOACH has been globally recognized as the world’s #1 ranked business consulting/coaching franchise.

The New York stop is part of a series of “tour stops” for Sugars this year, and he is scheduled to present his “Business is Booming” workshop in a total of 52 cities in the U.S. and Canada.
