Oriental Gardens – Information and Advice on Creating an Oriental Style Garden

The fundamental nature of the Oriental garden lies in the re-creation of nature within the garden’s boundaries. Most people are familiar with the classic example of the raked sand and rock composition, in which the rocks form islands within a sea of raked gravel, with the gravel breaking as waves on the rocks.

Although China and Japan have some of the richest, natural floras in the world, only a relatively small range of plants are used in traditional gardens; this is largely because these gardens were conceived by poets, artists, and scholars rather than botanists or gardeners. Planting is limited and reserved, with each shrub or tree having a meaning or symbolic place in the overall composition.

The concept of an Oriental ‘dry’ garden, with its contrasting surfaces of stone, rock, cobbles and gravel, lends itself to perfectly to gardens all over the world.

The Principles of the Oriental Garden Style

Garden design in China is an ancient art going back over 3,000 years. Gardens were created by philosophers and scholars as quiet, peaceful places for contemplation and meditation. The elements used in design were traditionally simple and symbolic, reflecting China’s vast landscape of green valleys, rocks, mountains, lakes and falling water. Paths were winding or zigzagged, which enabled different prospects and views to be gradually revealed. Steeply arched bridges over water gave views of fish or simply reflections.

Japanese gardens evolved from the Chinese over 1,200 years ago and are inspired by the lakes, hills and islands of Japan. They differ from Chinese gardens in that they have symbolic groups of shaped stones; raked gravel or sands around mounded “islands”; richer, denser plantings of carefully shaped and dwarfed shrubs and trees; and stone lanterns.

Over the years, the Oriental garden has evolved into three major styles:

The flat garden containing the simplest elements of raked gravel or sand, a flat or vertical stone and a bamboo. The dry garden, which comprises stones and hills in dry channels and watercourses. The hill and water (or tea) garden, which consists of a complete landscape of hills, a watercourse, pines and other trees, all among rocks and a lake.

Oriental gardens are closely managed by their gardeners; they depend heavily on carefully manicured Japanese cherries and maples, pruned azaleas and evergreens, and irises planted in blocks. Mosses are often introduced as ground-cover. Water almost always plays an important role in the Oriental garden; these may include natural looking lakes and pools, or the appealing use of water spouts and bamboo flumes. Simple buildings are also a fundamental feature of Oriental gardens, with pavilions, tea houses or temples, all intended for viewing, resting and contemplation.

Whilst it may be difficult to reproduce these Chinese and Japanese gardens accurately in a modern garden, some of the design principles may be utilised: simplicity, symbolism, balance and calm are elements that are often effective in various garden designs. The creative use of water and hard materials should provide inspiration for designing even the smallest garden, whilst on a larger scale, the idea of sculpting the landscape may be useful in planning garden outlooks.

The true Oriental garden is a place of peace, meditation, and tranquillity. The greatest lesson to be learned from Oriental garden design is simplicity, which may be revealed in the flawless detailing of gullies and channels, the arrangement of stepping stones set among different plantings, or the beautifully designed buildings and adjoining decks.

Creating a Diet Plan for Your Diabetes

Know Yourself

The most important consideration to keep in mind is your own weight, target blood sugar level, drug regimen such as insulin shots and blood sugar lowering agents and the presence or absence of other diseases. What’s more, take into account your personal tastes and lifestyle needs.

Knowing Your Food Groups

Before creating an effective diabetic diet plan, you should know the fundamentals about food. Foods basically fall into four categories:

1. Carbohydrates: Carbohydrates are the body’s main source of energy. Starches like bread, rice and cereals, fruits and vegetables, sweet drinks and snack foods such as sodas potato chips.First of all, identify and focus on the healthy sources of carbohydrates such as whole wheat bread as opposed to white bread. The second step is where carbohydrate counting comes in. The amount you need from this group depends on your target blood sugar level. A 45%-60% of carbohydrates of your daily calories is an acceptable amount although it may vary for different individuals.

2. Fats: Contrary to popular belief, fats are needed by the body too provided they are in the right amount. Keep your fat intake within 20%-35% of your daily calories. Look out for saturated and trans fats and limit the intake of the former to no more than 7% of your daily calories and as much as possible avoid the latter completely. Choose omega 3 fatty acids rich foods sush as salmon and mackerel, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats such as olive oil for cooking your meals.

3. Proteins: These are needed by the body primarily for tissue repair and muscle growth. But proteins are broken down into glucose too in a process known as gluconeogenesis to provide energy. Hence, it can trigger high sugar levels too. A modest 15%-20% protein of your daily calorie intake is a reasonable range.

4. Fibers: These are usually found in fruits and vegetables. They should compose a larger part of your meal because they give the body the sense of being full and thus, curb your overeating tendencies. A 25-30g of fiber each day is good for you.

Keep in mind that 1 g of carbohydrate and 1g of protein provides 4 kilocalories each. 1g of fat is equivalent to 9 kilocalories.

Use Food Exchange Lists

This information provides the diabetic patient the power to choose food from an approved list of food categories in order to cater, to a certain extent, to her own personal preferences. With it, the diabetic can substitute a certain food for another one belonging to the same food group. It provides approximately the same amount of the necessary nutrients and has a similar effect on the blood sugar levels. As a result, the target blood sugar level remains predictable and more importantly, still attainable.

Advice for Creating Online Videos

Creating online video is an extremely effective way for you to provide entertainment or education to visitors. However, it can be difficult deciding how to shoot the video, and then how to get uploaded and seen by as many people as possible.

Most people have heard of Youtube, but a few seconds of home footage taped off of your cell phone and uploaded to Youtube is not an effective way to gain attention, especially if you are trying to pursue video from a business perspective.

Here are some thoughts on the hardward and distribution of online video.

Hardware for Legal Videos

The exact model of camcorder you end up with will be up to you, but there are a few key factors that we should discuss before you make the purchase.

The first is storage style. These days camcorders can retain their footage through vhs-style mini tapes, dvds, or direct hard drives. Each come with their own benefit, but if you intend on putting your videos on the internet, the internal hard drive with an usb jack is a very good choice.

You also have to consider how important HD video quality is to you. HD cameras tend to be a lot more expensive. If you intend to make legal videos that are not terribly fancy or action intensive, then HD probably isn’t a necessity. But, again, it’s totally up to you.

Two other things to consider are mic location and battery life. Front mounted mics tend to be better at picking up the voices of individuals in front of the camera. Good battery life allows to you make more videos in a single sitting, or longer videos without having to get up and then edit out the lapse later on.

Distribution of Legal Videos

Once you have your video taped and ready to go, it’s important that you know how to get the word out.

First of all, you want to have a repository on your home page to house them. After all, if people are visiting you directly, you want to make sure they can find your videos.

Second, you want to create accounts on the biggest video sharing websites – examples include YouTube, vimeo, blip, Google, and revver.

After you’ve created those accounts, make your life easy and sign up for an account with TubeMogul. TubeMogul allows you to connect all of your accounts into one uploading website. Then, whenever you upload a video to TubeMogul, it distributes that video to all the websites you have accounts for.

Advice for Men: Creating a Clever Halloween Costume

As the leaves start to change and the brisk autumn breezes begin to blow, you will inevitably be hit with that annoying question, “What are you going to be for Halloween?” And just like every other year, you will be completely dumbfounded and caught off guard like Brittney Spears exiting a limousine. And don’t even pretend like you don’t yearn for an amazingly awesome, talk-of-the-party, unforgettable costume. Well, guess what? I will make your wildest dreams come true. Well, not your wildest, but I might spark some good ideas for this year’s fright fest.

Women have it easy. They can get away with showing a little skin and discretely placing the word “sexy” before any costume’s title (i.e. sexy pirate, sexy bumble bee, etc.) and will look great. Unfortunately, if you are member of the male gender, you are forced to think up a clever costume because stuffing your out-of-shape body into a Speedo will be a little too scary.

How should you get noticed this Halloween? Well gentlemen, show off the sexiest part of you body—you mind. Sporting a smart and well-thought out costume can show off your creativity and humor—and women love a guy who can make them laugh.

First of all, make sure they are laughing with you—not at you. If you can’t remember the last time you got to the gym, you should probably stay away from spandex. I know a big belly can be a sign of power and wealth in some cultures; unfortunately in America this is not the case. So tip numero uno: Wear a costume that will be comfortable all night. I come from the northeast where the temperatures dip down to the single digits by October. One of my costume’s required a pair of hot pants and a t-shirt—not the best idea. I was freezing all night and almost caught pneumonia.

I’m not going to give you actual ideas because that wouldn’t be creative. Rather, I will guide you on coming up with your own original concept. You should start by making your costume custom tailored to you. For instance, if your name is Matt you could paste a bunch of linoleum flooring pieces all over your body and wear a “Hello my name is: Matt” sticker and go as a floor mat. Feel free to get creative and build off this idea—there are a lot of different types of mats out there. If your name if Mike, think of an idea where you can have a “mic.” A personal costume is great for sparking conversations and introductions.

In addition to incorporating your name into the costume, construct an outfit that will engage others. Maybe design a pair of overalls made from an old twister mat. This way the ladies will literally have their hands all over you. I recommend working any popular, old school game into your costume. People love nostalgia—can’t get enough of it.

Not impressed by the ideas thus far? Already tossed your hungry, hungry hippos? Try to expand your thinking. Think outside the box. Hey, that’s an idea! Make a hat with a box attached to it and you will literally be thinking “outside the box.” Phrases like that can make clever costumes. Also consider working food into your outfit, for a “tasty” idea. There’s nothing like showing how “sweet” you are than covering yourself in lollipops.

Hopefully this helps get your creative juices flowing. I hope I don’t see a million auto floor mats this Halloween; you’re better than that. At least come up with your own brand and write something like Weathertech all over. –Mike Rosania

Web Design Guide To Creating Better Links

Needless to say, links are one of the most vital parts of a web page. Your web design company will definitely require you to come up with links in the sites you make to please your clients better. When people think of site contents, what generally comes to mind is the text that is written on a page. However, know that the page content also includes images and everything else relevant that is included in the page’s web design.

In Web Design Links Reinforce Scannability

It is a proven fact that online visitors who view a page are generally drawn to images. But aside from that, it is also proven that their attention is also immediately caught by links because they are underlined and set in a different colour from the rest of the text. Your web design company will strictly advice you to make your links stand out in order for them to catch the eye of your readers. Of course, your text content or web copy must able to reinforce scannability of your page. Fortunately, the addition of links that stand out well make the content even more scannable. Bear in mind during web design though that these links will only be effective if they are related to the site content and the linked text. Your web design company should know better.

Web design Tip #1: Links on Your Home Page

Unless you are web designing a site that is only made of 1 page, your home page should have links to all the other parts of your website. Bear in mind too that most online readers will scan through your home page much more than they are likely to read it, so you need to make sure that your links speak for themselves and are self-explanatory. However, avoid a home page that is made up only of links, and nothing. Doing this will defeat the purpose of scannability; the links will no longer stand out. Also, never make your link title fancy or make your readers guess where the link will lead to. Your web design company will also be pleased if you put in links to the other general pages of your site.

Web design Tip #2: General to Specific is the Way to Go

When online users search for information, they usually start from the general and eventually get more specific as they try to narrow down their search. Using the same logic, try to think of those links in your site as a funnel. You have to start with a general category at your top page and narrow it down further as your readers search for what they want.

Web design Tip #3: How to Write Links and Setting Them

Here are some tips to come up with better and more clickable links:

• Check your log files and look for a trend of what people are mostly searching your site for. Use the most commonly used words as your links to other parts of your site.

• You should also verify that your links actually go to where you have implied for them to go. Do not take the risk of ruining your client’s image (and that of your web design company) by links that lie. When readers find that the information they are searching for is not there, they will leave and will not likely return.

• Write your links as clearly as possible. If you are linking to an e-book, your text should read something like “this e-Book…” Moreover, the link should actually go to a page with an e-Book in it, and not an online store or a biography of an author.

• When web designing, never make the mistake of playing games with your links. Do not put those links just for the sake of putting them. Your web design company will surely require you to put links that are as straightforward as possible. Remember that your web design company wants to be of service to readers and to the clients to whom you are making the page for. Therefore, make sure that you only put in useful links.

Create links that are incorporated into significant content. Your links should be more than just a list of links that will not make sense on the part of online users. Make sure that the links contain explanations on what it contains. If you are presenting a link that leads to more links, you need to make sure that you add in an explanation of what the readers should expect so that they will not be surprised to see a list of links. Your web design company will indeed appreciate such efforts.

Dating Tips For Men – Creating Attraction With Her And Winning Her Over

If you want to be able to really see some success with women, if you want to become the kind of guy that women fall all over, then you know that you have to be able to create attraction with her. You have to be able to win her over and make her want you so badly, that it’s almost as if she cannot resist seeing you or being with you. Now, I know that all this is much easier said than done, but it’s really not out of your reach.

Let’s say that you have just met a woman and you have started talking with her and everything seems to be going good. Do you know exactly what you are going to have to say and do to make her fall for you?

Do you know how to trigger her attraction and make her think about you with passion, lust, and desire?

What can you do in order to create attraction with her and win her over?

1. You have to start with your body language to attract a woman. Guys, you have to be able to show a woman just by using your body language that you are more than confident and secure around her and you are NOT the kind of guy that is going to just go around and seek after her approval. Remember, a woman wants to meet a man, and not some guy that is going to just act like a love sick puppy dog with her.

2. You’ve got to create sexual tension through playfully teasing with her. Playfully teasing a woman is an easy way to make a woman start to feel a lot more receptive to you and she will start to let down her guard so to speak and become much more relaxed, comfortable, and even flirty when she is with you. You don’t want to look like one of those uptight kind of guys that doesn’t know at all how to tease a woman.

3. You’ve got to be able to talk to a woman and keep her hooked on you and what you are saying. Conversation can make or break you at times with a woman and if you cannot keep her attention on you while you are talking to her, then you are going to have a difficult time getting her to really fall for you. To create attraction with a woman through conversation, you have to be able to draw her in, and keep her with you the entire time.

Do you want to know how to create attraction with her like no other man can?

Creating a Diabetic Meal Plan

The diabetic meal plan is one of the cornerstones of managing blood sugar levels that is so important for those who suffer with this disease. For this reason there are several systems that can be used for meal planning which include a consistent carbohydrate diabetes meal plan, exchange lists, point systems, food groups, and calorie counting. Each individual will have different dietary needs based on their eating habits, diet history, and special needs which must be built around the plan chosen.

Personal preferences need to be considered carefully when creating a diabetic diet plan. This is an important part of gaining compliance with the plan because one of the most difficult parts of managing diabetes is altering the foods that can be eaten along with a change in personal meal patterns. Anyone who is diabetic needs to take an active part in their meal planning with the help of a registered dietician as recommended by the American Diabetes Association.

The traditional and well known exchange list diet plan is being replaced with the consistent-carbohydrate meal plan. The idea with this plan is focusing on the carbohydrate content of the foods that are eaten with a meal. Because carbohydrates are the primary cause of raised blood sugars immediately after a meal it is important to keep the amount eaten under control. By eating a similar amount of carbs at each meal or snack that are part of the individual diet plan it is easier to manage glucose levels.

This method also helps to determine how much insulin is needed before meals; much more so then the amount of protein and fats being eaten. Counting carbohydrates allows the diabetic to calculate the proper amount of insulin needed as prescribed by their doctor.

Exchange lists work differently in that the meal plan is based on the diabetic’s ideal weight, activity level, age, and occupation. Knowing these helps the diabetic calculate the amount of kilocalories they need to consume each day to maintain energy levels while controlling blood glucose levels. Once the amount of calories is calculated the amount of calories derived from proteins, fats, and carbs can then be determined. This is done using guidelines as set forth by the American Diabetes Association and the American Dietetic Association.

The exchange lists helps the diabetic plan their meals by showing them how their food choices should be distributed throughout the day. These lists give the type of food and quantity of each food type that makes up one exchange or serving in regular household cooking measurements. These portions can be substituted or exchanged for one another with little impact as to the amount of calories consumed. This makes it easy for the diabetic to control their caloric intake to match their needs.

A successful diabetic meal plan keeps blood sugar levels under control and is an important part of managing this life threatening disease and its complications.

If you are diabetic or know someone who is and you want to learn more about a diabetic meal plan please visit the website Diabetic Diet Plans by clicking here.

Envisioning the Open Road: Automotive Designers Creating the Cars of Today & Tomorrow

Envisioning the Open Road: Automotive Designers Creating the Cars of Today & Tomorrow

By Damian McKnight
Designschools.com Contributing Writer

It can be argued that no design career is sexier than that of the Automotive Designer. Today’s designers embody the styles and culture of today while contouring the style of tomorrow. They utilize product design principles and emerging technology to create commercial, yet innovative, designs for new automobiles, motorcycles, trucks, buses, coaches, and vans. Often working in tandom with a large team of engineers, designers work to ensure that their concepts are appealing to consumers, can actually lead to functioning automobiles, and are environmentally friendly and affordable. Not to mention…..sexy.

History

In the United States, automotive design reached a critical juncture in 1924 when the American national automobile market began reaching saturation. To maintain sales, General Motors pioneer Alfred P. Sloan Jr. suggested annual model-year design changes in the hope that car owners would want to buy a new replacement each year. His strategy succeeded and was later adapted by rest of the industry.

The most celebrated American auto designer is probably Harley Earl, who brought the tailfin and other aeronautical design references to auto design in the 1950s. Earl is joined among legendary auto designers by Gordon Buehrig, responsible for the Auburn 851 and iconic Cord 810 and 812. Another notable designer who had a markedly different style was Chrysler group’s designer Virgil Exner, an early pioneer of Cab forward (a.k.a.Forward look) design in mid-1950s. Exner is also credited with introducing the pointed tail fins in the 1956 Plymouth Belvedere later adapted by all other Detroit studios.

The Work

The tasks of a car design team are usually split into three main aspects: exterior design, interior design, and color and trim design. Graphic design is also an important aspect of automotive design; this is generally shared amongst the design team as the lead designer sees fit. Design focuses not only on the isolated outer shape of automobile parts, but concentrates on the combination of form and function, starting from the vehicle package. Here is a breakdown of the design elements:

Exterior Design: The stylist responsible for the design of the exterior of the vehicle is the one who develops the proportions, shape, and surfaces of the vehicle. Exterior design is first done by a series of digital or manual drawings, and clay (industrial plasticine) models are developed from those drawings. 3 and 5 CNC Milling Machines are utilized in creating the clay model of the final design.Even in modern times with 3d software and virtual models on powerwalls, the clay model is still the most important tool in evaluating the design of a car and therefore used throughout the industry. The data from these models are then used to create a further mockups of the final design.
Interior Design: The stylist responsible for the interior design of the vehicle develops the proportions, shape, placement, and surfaces for the instrument panel, seats, door trim panels, headliner, pillar trims, etc. With the interior, the emphasis is on ergonomics and the ultimate comfort of the passengers. The design process with the interior design of the car is the same as with exterior design (sketch, digital model and clay model). The aesthetic value of the interior will need to correspond to ergonomic functionality and utility features as well. In particular, vehicular electronic components and parts will give more challenges to automotive designers who are required to update designs based on the latest information and knowledge associated with emerging vehicular gadgetry, particularly dashtop mobile devices, like GPS navigation, satellite radio, HD radio, mobile TV, MP3 players, video playback and smartphone interfaces.
Color and Trim Design: The color and trim (or color and materials) designer is responsible for the research, design, and development of all interior and exterior colors and materials used on a vehicle. These include paints, plastics, fabric designs, leather, grains, carpet, headliner, wood trim, and so on. Designers work closely with the exterior and interior designers and draw inspiration from other design disciplines such as: industrial design, fashion, home furnishing, architecture and sometimes product design.
Graphic Design: The design team also develop graphics for items such as: badges, decals, dials, switches, kick or tread strips, liveries. Concept sketching
Clay modeling
Class A surfaces
Scale model creation
Prototype development
Computer-aided design
Computer modeling
Powertrain engineering
Manufacturing process design

The Development Process

Includes the following steps:

Education

Automotive design is practiced by designers who have art backgrounds and degrees in industrial design or transportation design. Careers related to Auto Design include product design, automotive engineering, and electrical engineering. Successful designers need to be creative and should have strong math, drawing, and science skills. They must also have strong skills in computer-aided draftingand communication.

Since Automotive Design is a very competitive field, a high level of academic achievement is beneficial when looking for an entry-level job. Courses such as industrial design, electrical engineering, mathematics, environmental science and computer-aided drafting are often required for designers looking to break into the industry. An automotive engineering degree program can provide simulation training and hands-on experience in the field. An internship or work study program is often a necessary component of many automotive engineering colleges, and this can provide immediate job placement after graduation.

The following schools of higher education are recommended:

Academy of Art University San Francisco, CA
Art Center College of Design Pasadena, CA
The Art Institutes
College for Creative Studies Detroit, MI
Humber College Toronto, Canada
Lawrence Technological University Southfield, MI
Pratt Institute New York, NY
Savannah College of Art and Design Atlanta, GA
University of Cincinnati – School of Design Cincinnati, OH

Outlook

Despite the stagnant growth of the automotive manufacturing industry, careers in automotive design is still projected to grow as fast as the average for all occupations through 2014. There is still a high demand for skilled engineers who specialize in technology and computer-aided processes and a focus on an increasing fuel-efficient economy offer valuable opportunities for a successful automotive engineering career.

The National Association of Colleges and Employers reports that starting offers averaged ,585 for those with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. However, salaries for car designers varies greatly depending on experience, employer and location.
